There are 4 established nature trails, each taking the visitor through different aspects of the project and places of interest. Visitors can get detailed information from the guide, about each trail prior to making a choice.
- The Yellow trail – takes you through a riparian habitat
- The Bambaragala Trail – to the conserved forest. This trail lies above the Galge
- The Red Trail – butterflies and birds
- The Green Trail – woody plants
Each of the above takes you through to a different experience. In addition, sign boards, jungle huts facilitate visitors while addressing the safety concerns. These sites are accessible on foot.
The Bambaragala forest reserve:
A hike up to the Bambaragala reservation is a must for the serious nature lover. Approximately 250 hectares in extent, the climb up to this pristine forest is an exhilarating experience. If the weather permits, a picnic lunch in the forest beside the rushing waters of Bambaragala is an unforgettable experience.
The night watch:
For the patient naturalist, we have built a tower where one can spend an hour or two in the quietness of the night, observing the movement of the nocturnal such as porcupine, wild boar, otters etc.
Butterfly park:
Plants to the butterfly park have been introduced with particular emphasis on food plants and nectaring plants of butterflies, in order to enhance the species richness of butterflies within the site.
Cultural attractions:
Nedun Raja Maha Viharaya is situated close to the project site (approximately 5 Kms away) and has a very old histoy. The temple was built during the time of King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last king of Sri Lanka. The temple comprises ancient shrine rooms with magnificent hand drawn pictures which belong to the Kandyan era. A visit to the temple should be a part of the Mahausakande experience.
Community benefits: The project tries to maximize the benefits to the locals by selling their local items as food, sweet-meats etc. to the visitors and also employing nature guides from the local community.
